Teaching large classes

How do we teach in a crowded classroom?

In our classes, our aim is to ensure that every student gets the attention they need so that they can learn and improve their English skills. However, we do not have control over the class size??. So, in many cases, we find ourselves teaching classes with 40-50 students. Managing such a large number of students is a challenge. Classroom management, teaching and assessment are more  difficult than with smaller classes. Many methods and techniques cannot be used in large classrooms. Students tend to become distracted and discipline problems may arise. Also, it becomes difficult for us to keep track of students’ progress. Paying attention to students who need more help is another critical factor. In these situations, what is the most appropriate set of methods and techniques we can use?

You can adopt and adapt one or more of the following strategies. They include pair and group work, formative assessment, language games, total physical response, small classroom projects, co-creation of learning rubrics, affordable teaching aids, language drills, poster-making, and culturally relevant multilingual group discussions. You can find more information on each of these strategies on the YouTube playlist shared here.
