Improving learner engagement

How do we improve learner engagement in the classroom?

In a normal school day, students take classes in around four to five subjects. Their attention can vary due to fatigue, different levels of interest, motivation, personal issues, etc. Sometimes, discipline and inter-personal issues may hamper learning as well. While teachers cannot control what students experience outside their class, we can adopt techniques to engage students better in the language classroom itself.  The first thing we can do is to make our students aware of their learning goals and set some ground rules. This can provide them with better clarity as to what they are expected to do. The next point is to use activities that are appropriate for their levels. In an earlier episode, we discussed the challenges that accompany a multilevel classroom. If a learner is faced with tasks that are too difficult or too easy for them, they are likely to lose interest. A third thing we can do is to use language games as techniques for teaching vocabulary, grammar or the four skills. Games are likely to excite students and bring a fun element to the learning experience. Fourth, we can include team-based activities such as jigsaw, project based learning and information gap. These allow students to discuss and put their heads together to finish a task. Apart from learning, the use of formative assessments can also help to keep learners engaged in the classroom.
